If you haven’t been following along, I’ve started a challenge group with my husband and we’ve been doing P90X. If you have done the workouts, you’ll find that it’s very strategic in that you are never working similar muscles at the same time. They’ve structured this program this way because they recognize the need to rest your muscles.
When I like to work out, I like to work out hard. I love the challenge of pushing a higher weight and being able to surpass what I did the previous time. However, you have to remember that everytime you work out, you create damage in your muscles. It’s too small to notice, but if you continue to work that muscle, the damage will increase. In addition, resting allows your muscles to build, and if you continuously use those muscles, you will not see any improvements.
What does “rest” mean? If you are on an aggressive program like P90X, then you should be doing these things:
- Alternating light and heavy weights, or splitting up your workouts so that your strength training is split up by cardio training.
- Getting enough rest at night, an average of 7 hours
- If you are in stressful situations, making sure to deal with the stress. Stress can make your body tense and will be hard to recover your muscles. A great way to destress is to meditate or incorporate yoga or pilates into your routine.
So remember, working out harder is not always going to be the answer to getting that rock hard bod. Incorporating a rest day and perhaps a rest week every 6 weeks will help you get to your fitness goals!

I’ve always loved P90X, I’ve done it once before and had some amazing results. When Donny and I wanted to start our challenge group, I thought P90X was a great program to do; we had done it previously and wanted to inspire others as well. For those brides out there, we all know we want to get rid of our underarm fat and have out arms looking lean with just a bit of muscle. After all, most dresses are made strapless and leave our arms exposed.
It was my Day 3 of P90X and I have to say, this is my favourite day (aside from Plyo). Why? Well looking at myself in the mirror with my muscles working is certainly an ego booster. Seeing my muscles bulge out when counting my reps feels like I’m getting somewhere, that I will have the lean and awesome arms I’m looking for. Can’t wait to see where I’ll be at the end of the 90 days!
